World News: Ukraine may consider drafting women into its military to help "save Europe from war," according to General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.K. and former top military commander. Amid ongoing Russian advances in eastern Ukraine and an approaching harsh winter, Zaluzhnyi indicated that drafting women could become necessary if other efforts to avoid a larger European conflict fail. However, he hopes to avoid such a move.

Both Ukraine and Russia face difficulties replenishing troops after significant casualties, with estimates suggesting a combined total of about 1 million casualties. Ukraine, with a smaller population, has a smaller pool of potential recruits than Russia. Tens of thousands of women already serve in Ukraine’s military, with over 13,000 in combat roles. While Ukraine does not currently have a mandatory draft for women, those with medical qualifications must register for military service.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has resisted mandatory mobilization for women but lowered the draft age for men. Discussions about encouraging Ukrainian men abroad to return and serve are also ongoing. Despite challenges, both men and women in Ukraine are united in resisting Russian aggression.

As far as the US goes, drafting women isn’t a new idea. In fact, the first time this convo came up was back in 1945 when conscripting nurses was the name of the game.

While drafting women isn’t new, as newer pressures mount around the world, the conversation being on the table could have an impact closer to home than we may realize but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
