Career: The election is done and over with, but how does that affect hiring? Well, it can slow things down a bit until the change of the guard is said and done. But even if it doesn’t, the job market is hard.

What’s a girl gotta do to stand out around here?

Jasmine Escalera, a seasoned career coach with 15 years of experience, has encountered all kinds of career advice online, but she believes social media platforms like TikTok excel at sharing effective networking strategies. According to Escalera, making genuine human connections can propel a job search far faster than tactics like mass applying for jobs.

Her top advice? Focus on building a healthy, supportive professional network, and when networking, don’t shy away from discussing salary ranges. Instead of directly asking about someone’s pay, keep the conversation specific to the position you’re interested in. A question like, “Do you have any advice on the typical salary range for X position?” can provide valuable insights while keeping the conversation comfortable.

Escalera emphasizes that having open discussions about salary can help close the gender pay gap by giving job seekers—especially women—the industry insights they need. While online salary databases offer a good starting point, she explains that personal connections can provide more tailored and relevant information, empowering job seekers to advocate for fair compensation.

Education: The new administration is once again revisiting a long-standing conservative objective: to reduce federal involvement in education while setting new standards for schools nationwide. In a recent Agenda 47 video, Trump highlighted goals such as dismantling the Department of Education, promoting patriotism in schools, reintroducing school prayer, and preventing “political indoctrination.”

One key proposal involves converting federal funds for high-poverty schools and special education into block grants for states, granting them the flexibility to use funds as they see fit, including potentially diverting them to initiatives like school vouchers. While this approach aims to give states more autonomy, it could also reduce support for low-income schools and special education programs.

However, dismantling the Department of Education would require congressional approval, where there may be resistance from lawmakers concerned about potential funding gaps for critical programs. Federal funds have historically been used as leverage to shape state education policy—a tool that previous administrations, including Trump’s, have used to enforce standards. Without federal oversight of these funds, the administration’s influence over state-level education policies may diminish.

Though the administration is eager to pursue these changes, there are substantial legislative and logistical challenges ahead. Whether or not these proposals gain traction in Congress will ultimately shape the future of federal involvement in education.
