Mental health is health

And inflation has kind of been cray cray

Health: California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed two significant pieces of legislation aimed at transforming the state's mental health system and addressing its worsening homelessness crisis.

The proposals will be put before voters in 2024. However, the proposals require approval to borrow billions of dollars through a bond to fund the initiatives. The measures would allow the state to borrow $6.38 billion to create new treatment beds, housing, and outpatient treatment slots, serving up to 100,000 people annually. They would also revamp how counties finance mental and behavioral health programs.

The reforms aim to make a significant impact on California's growing homelessness crisis and represent the first major update to the state's mental health system in 20 years. At the moment, this sounds like good news, but it’s always good to read the fine print.

Home: On Thursday, real estate stocks, tracked by the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE), saw losses exceeding 1%, breaking a six-day winning streak and reversing earlier gains. This shift was due to growing risk aversion in global markets following unexpectedly high inflation rates in September. (We’ve all been feeling that, am I right?!)

Additionally, there was concerning news regarding mortgage rates. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage reached 7.57%, marking the highest level in 23 years, and the rate on a 15-year fixed mortgage also increased.

It seems like we’ll need to wait things out for the rates to drop and stabilize on the real estate front.

Education: AI homework companion? That may not be too far off in our children’s futures. While these AI helpers aren’t around just yet, the possible applications are intriguing enough to some pioneering entrepreneurs.

Just exactly how this will take place (perhaps in the form on an education centered around AI learning helpers as Forbes suggests) remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting frontier that more than a few are sure to explore.

Yep, it’s nearing the end of 2023 and we’re still talking about inflation. 🤦‍♀️

Inflation is driven by high gas and rent prices, and factors like motor vehicle insurance, eggs, poultry, meat, fish, alcoholic beverages, electricity have seen price increases. (We’ve all felt it.)

Inflation in September remained at 3.7% year-on-year, slightly higher than economist predictions. The upside here is it’s significantly lower than the 8.2% recorded last year and the 9.1% we had in June 2022.

The Core Consumer Price Index (CPI), which excludes volatile food and energy prices, slowed to 4.1% from 4.3% the previous month.

Thankfully, the Federal Reserve has been working to control inflation with high interest rates. While they didn't approve another interest rate hike, they haven't ruled out the possibility of one so there is at least that.

Also, it’s a good idea to shop around for higher interest rates on savings accounts and continue regular investing for long-term goals.
