Burnt Out? You’re Not Alone—Millennials Are Taking Career Breaks on Purpose

PHOTO: Annie Louey
Burnout is having a moment—and not in a good way. Between hustle culture, side gigs, and trying to maintain some version of “balance,” millennial women are feeling the pressure more than ever. The result? Exhaustion. Like, soul-deep, can’t-even-open-an-email kind of tired. And honestly, it’s not just you. More and more millennials are choosing to step back from work entirely, taking what they’re calling “mini-retirements” to rest, reset, and reassess.
These breaks aren’t just about travel or lounging (though yes, both are welcome). They’re about mental clarity, healing from burnout, and redefining what success even means. For a lot of women, the pandemic cracked open the illusion that climbing the ladder was the only way up. Now? It’s less about productivity and more about peace. Career breaks are becoming less taboo and more necessary—a form of self-respect, not self-sabotage.
So if you’ve been fantasizing about quitting your job to stare at the sky, journal in silence, or finally figure out what lights you up—maybe you’re not lazy or lost. Maybe you’re just listening. And maybe that’s exactly what this moment is asking of us.
The Dating Gap Is Getting Awkward

Modern dating has officially entered the group project phase—where one person shows up with a color-coded spreadsheet and the other forgot the assignment existed. The numbers don’t lie: 47% of women ages 25 to 34 have a bachelor’s degree, compared to just 37% of men. Single women now own 2.7 million more homes than single men. That’s not a small gap—that’s a whole canyon.
It’s not just about who has the most degrees or the nicest apartment. It’s about effort. And emotional intelligence. And whether the man you’re dating has ever considered seeing a therapist or investing in, say, a real bedframe. For a lot of millennial women, it’s starting to feel like you have to choose between dating someone with ambition or emotional maturity. Or—let’s be real—basic hygiene.
Even when things look balanced on paper—similar jobs, same neighborhood, mutual friends—the dynamic often still feels off. Women are doing more of the emotional labor. More of the cleaning. More of the communicating. More of the growth. And the data backs this up: women are more likely to go to therapy, talk to friends about real things, and generally take care of their mental and emotional well-being. Men? Not as much. It’s not about bashing them—it’s about naming a pattern. One that leaves a lot of women wondering if they’re asking for too much, when really, they’re just asking for the basics. So yes, there’s a “loneliness epidemic” for men. But for women, there’s a disappointment epidemic—and it’s spreading fast.
Sticky Date Bourbon Smash Recipe

If these dates aren’t working out, here’s a date drink that definitely will. Meet the Sticky Date Bourbon Smash — a cocktail that’s basically a dessert and a drink all rolled into one cozy, boozy hug. Inspired by one of our fave winter treats (sticky date pudding, duh), this drink mixes homemade date caramel jam, fresh figs, brown sugar, and bourbon, topped with a splash of ginger beer for a little fizz and spice. The best part? Smash cocktails are ridiculously easy to make—no fancy bar tools required.
Summer 2025 Forecast

Just when we thought summer couldn’t get any hotter — surprise! Forecasters are saying this one might break records. Again. Major heatwaves are expected to roll across the U.S. in the coming months, from the deserts of Arizona to the sidewalks of New York.
But this isn’t just about sweating through your linen shorts. It’s a bigger climate story. Experts are warning that the rising heat isn’t just seasonal — it’s systemic. Climate change is pushing temperatures up and making extreme heat more intense and more frequent. And just to keep things interesting, federal budget cuts are making it harder for cities to prepare. So yes, it’s going to be hot — but it’s also going to be complicated.
And while you're adjusting your summer plans (earlier hikes, iced everything), don’t forget that extreme heat is a public health issue, too. Older adults, outdoor workers, and folks without access to AC are especially vulnerable. So let’s all hydrate, check on each other, and maybe stop pretending the Earth isn’t screaming for help.
Here are 2 women-powered stocks we’re loving right now

Oracle (ORCL) Oracle’s been quietly killing the cloud game — and while AI stocks have been acting like they’re on espresso shots, Oracle’s actually building the infrastructure that keeps all that data drama running. Plus, Safra Catz has been leading the charge with straight-up wizardry since 2014.
Why now? Strong earnings, new AI cloud deals, and steady momentum. Basically, this stock is the definition of “unbothered.”
General Motors (GM) Mary Barra is the first woman to run a major car company, and she's not playing. GM’s going hard on electric vehicles, AI integration, and smart manufacturing. Yes, cars — but also yes to innovation and efficiency.
Why now? GM just raised its guidance, is buying back more stock, and the market’s finally giving legacy brands some EV respect.
