AI is snitching on you

and killing these jobs...

“[AI is] not about displacing humans, it’s about humanizing the digital experience.” — Rob Garfopens

Tech: AI is a big help in a lot of different avenues. From helping craft art renderings to helping you write your next paper and much more. But researchers are catching on to students trying to let AI do all the heavy lifting of their writing and they’re catching on.

Detecting writing created by AI (artificial intelligence) has been tough for many companies. But now, some smart researchers have found a new way to spot AI-written scientific papers. They looked for "extra words" that started appearing a lot more often during 2023 and 2024, when AI tools became popular. They found that at least 10% of the scientific papers written in 2024 used AI.

Here’s how they did it: The researchers, from Germany's University of Tübingen and Northwestern University, studied 14 million scientific paper summaries from 2010 to 2024. They compared the usual word frequency from before 2023 to the word frequency in 2023 and 2024. They noticed some words like "delves," "showcasing," and "underscores" suddenly became much more common.

These word changes didn’t match any big world events. Instead, these changes were all about the style of writing, including verbs (action words), adjectives (describing words), and adverbs (words that describe actions).

By identifying these "marker words," they discovered that at least 10% of the recent papers were partly written by AI, especially in countries where English isn't the first language, like China and South Korea.

Why should we care? Well, it depends on your vantage point on the subject. On one hand, students should be putting in the work to learn how to write well, which is vital for personal expression and critical thinking. Software that detects AI text would deter students from taking the easy road.

On the other hand, if you are a student, having a helping hand in writing can help you not burn out and this sort of software could make using AI-generated text harder to use.

Either way, it appears that this AI-detecting tech is coming so y’all better keep those typing skills fresh.

Careers: The future of work is changing quickly with the rise of automation and artificial intelligence (AI). While these technologies bring exciting opportunities, they also threaten some jobs. That’s why identifying which jobs are at risk can help you find more stable career options before you go too far down a road where you need to pivot:

Here's a look at some of the 20 jobs that will probably be bit by automation in the next decade:

  1. Assembly Line Workers: Robots are taking over repetitive tasks in manufacturing.

  2. Cashiers: Self-checkout kiosks are replacing traditional cashiers in stores.

  3. Stock Clerks: Automated systems and robots manage inventory more efficiently.

  4. Taxi Drivers: Self-driving cars could make human taxi drivers unnecessary.

  5. Truck Drivers: Autonomous trucks might change the long-haul trucking industry.

  6. Bookkeeping Clerks & Accounting Assistants: Sophisticated software is automating routine accounting tasks.

  7. Telemarketers: Chatbots are increasingly handling customer interactions.

  8. Bank Tellers: Online banking reduces the need for in-person bank tellers.

  9. Security Guards: AI surveillance systems are changing the security landscape.

  10. Newspaper Delivery Workers: The decline of print media is reducing the need for newspaper delivery.

  11. Welders: Welding robots are performing complex tasks with high precision.

To thrive in your future career it's essential to keep learning new skills. Try to focus on transferable skills like critical thinking and teamwork, embrace the future of tech, and collaborate with machines.

By preparing for these changes, you can unlock exciting opportunities and navigate the challenges ahead.
